Artist’s Note

“From my studio overlooking the shore at Pitullie, I often watch ribbons of kelp being carried and churned by the waves as the tide rolls in. Kelp Wave is my interpretation of that movement, colour and energy, transformed into wearable art.”

Inspired by the kelp-covered shoreline below my studio on Scotland’s northeast coast, Kelp Wave captures the movement of kelp fronds as they are lifted, twisted and churned by incoming waves.

The richly textured spiral centre evokes the power and motion of the sea, while the radiating strands reflect the colours and forms of wet kelp glistening in the sunlight after the tide has receded. Layers of greens, blues, coppers, purples and golds echo the ever-changing palette of Scotland’s coastal waters.

Handcrafted from polymer clay, each individual component is shaped, finished and assembled by hand. The reverse features both a brooch fitting and pendant bail, allowing the piece to be worn as either a statement brooch or an eye-catching pendant.

Created in my Shorelight Studio overlooking the North Sea at Pitullie, Kelp Wave is a celebration of the wild beauty, movement and colour of Scotland’s coastline.
